Asbestos flooring products have been used since the 1920s. Vinyl sheet wallpaper was first introduced in 1920, while vinyl floor tile and vinyl sheet flooring were introduced in the 1950s.
While it can be costly to do so, the safest course of action is to assume that there is in fact asbestos in your tiles or flooring and get it treated, especially if your floor was installed in the 1980’s or before, the heyday of asbestos tiling. The most common was in the lining for vinyl sheets and floor tiles (also known as “lino” or “linoleum”). Asbestos was used to make the lino more durable. Asbestos might also be found in the mastic used to bond the covering to the floor. Some hard wearing composite floors contain about 2 per cent of mineral fibres, which may include asbestos.
